SEO on the Wirral, built around the customers you want

Birkenhead and Heswall are eight miles apart and share almost no customers. One Wirral strategy will not serve both.

The local picture

Two markets, and they search differently

The east side is trade and industry, around Birkenhead and the docks. The west and south, through Heswall, West Kirby and Hoylake, is mostly professional services and consumer businesses.

They need different work. A trade supplier in Birkenhead competes on specification and price against national suppliers, so the job is product pages and technical detail. A solicitor or dental practice in Heswall competes inside a few miles, where the map pack decides almost everything.

The other thing that catches people out is the river. Wirral businesses are routinely invisible in Liverpool searches and Liverpool businesses in Wirral ones, even though they are minutes apart. If you want both, it has to be built deliberately.

Where the work goes

What moves the needle on the Wirral

Google Business Profile done properly

For anything with a local catchment the map pack is most of the result. Categories, services, photographs, posts and above all reviews. This is unglamorous and it outperforms almost everything else.

Pages for the places you actually serve

One page listing thirty towns ranks for none of them. A genuine page for each area you really work in, with real detail, will. The test is whether the page would be useful if the town name were removed.

Crossing the river on purpose

If Liverpool is a real market for you it needs its own targeting and its own evidence, not a mention in a footer. The reverse applies to Liverpool firms wanting Wirral work.

A site that works on a phone

Local searches are overwhelmingly mobile and frequently urgent. If the number is not tappable and the page takes four seconds, the ranking was wasted.

For a local business, reviews and a properly built Google Business Profile will beat another six months of blogging.

How we work

What the first six months look like

Audit

Technical, content and competitive. You get the findings whether or not you continue.

Priorities

What to fix first, ordered by commercial value rather than by what is easiest to report.

Foundations

Crawling, indexing, speed and structure. Content sits on top of this, not instead of it.

Measurement

Enquiries and calls attributed back to the terms that produced them, not just positions.

Common questions

What Wirral businesses ask

Can we rank in both Wirral and Liverpool?

Yes, but not by accident. The map pack is driven heavily by physical proximity to the searcher, so a single Birkenhead address will not dominate Liverpool city centre results. It takes dedicated pages, genuine evidence of working there, and realistic expectations about which of the two you can lead in.

How important are reviews really?

For local search, very. They influence the map pack directly and they influence whether somebody clicks you rather than the business above you. It is the highest value thing most local businesses are not doing, and it costs nothing but the discipline of asking.

We cover the whole of the Wirral. Do we need a page per town?

Only for places you genuinely work in and can write something real about. A thin page per town is a pattern Google has been penalising for years. Better to have four substantial area pages that are true than twenty that are the same text with the name swapped.

Do you build websites as well?

Yes. Quite often an SEO audit concludes the site itself is the constraint, at which point we would talk about a new build or a redesign that keeps the rankings you already have. We would not recommend it if fixing the existing site is cheaper.

How do we know it is working?

Enquiries, not positions. We set up call tracking and attribution at the start so calls and forms are tied back to the search that produced them. Positions are a diagnostic on the way, not the thing you are buying.
