Marketing for manufacturers, joined up with the systems behind it

For most manufacturers the constraint is not enquiry volume. It is that nobody can say which enquiries were worth having, because the answer lives in a spreadsheet.

The problem

The enquiry is visible. Everything after it is not.

The pattern is remarkably consistent. A specification arrives by email or through a form. Somebody prices it in a spreadsheet. A quote goes out as a PDF. Whether it was won or lost lives in one person’s memory, or in a folder nobody reports from.

Nothing about that chain is visible to marketing. So the campaign gets judged on enquiry count, which rewards whichever source produces the cheapest enquiries rather than the most valuable orders.

For a business where one order can be worth more than a year of another, that is an expensive way to allocate a budget. And it is not really a marketing problem. It is a systems problem that marketing gets blamed for.

What we do

What works for manufacturers and suppliers

Search demand in this sector is specification led and usually national. Local marketing advice fits it badly.

Specification search

Your buyers search by material, dimension, standard, capacity or part. Those terms are lower volume, far higher intent, and generalist competitors are not bidding on them.

SEO

Built for a researcher

Pages that somebody can forward internally and defend to a procurement committee. Technical detail, standards, tolerances and lead times, not a landing page built for an impulse.

Quoting that reports

Quotes generated from a system rather than a spreadsheet, with won and lost recorded, so you can finally see which enquiries turn into orders.

Bespoke systems

Systems that talk

Stock, purchase orders, quoting, invoicing and accounts holding the data once. We have built exactly this for a UK wholesale supplier, including accounts sync.

Integrations

If quotes live in a spreadsheet and outcomes live in somebody's head, no amount of advertising will tell you which enquiries were worth having.

Why we are different

We build the system as well as run the campaign

Most agencies would tell you the quoting problem is not their department. For a manufacturer it is frequently the higher return piece of work, and it is the reason we do both.

We have built full operational platforms covering stock, purchase orders, quoting, sales orders, invoicing, credit notes, shipping and invoice chasing, with accounts synchronisation, for businesses in exactly this position. Once that exists, the marketing reporting has something real to point at.

It is not always the first thing to do. But when the enquiries are already arriving and nobody can tell you what happened to them, it is the thing standing between you and every other improvement.

Common questions

What manufacturers ask us

Our customers are national. Is local marketing any use?

Not for the sale, and we would not pretend otherwise. It helps with recruitment and with buyers checking you are a real business before placing a large order. The work that wins customers is national specification terms.

We sell through distributors. Should we advertise directly?

Often yes, carefully. Demand you generate flows to your distributors and strengthens the relationship, and it lets you see what the market is actually searching for rather than hearing it second hand.

Do we need to replace our ERP?

Usually not. The better answer is normally a custom layer that connects what you already run, so information is entered once and appears everywhere. Replacing a working accounts or ERP system is rarely the cheapest route.

Our sales cycle is long and involves several people. Can that be measured?

Yes, by pushing an intermediate stage such as quoted or specified back to the ad platforms rather than waiting for the order. The platforms learn from a mid funnel signal far sooner, and you still send the order when it lands.

Next step

Get in touch about marketing for your manufacturing business

Tell us what happens to an enquiry after it arrives. That conversation usually finds the money faster than looking at the ad account does.
